- Round 3: (case) Jacob is a successful business person and is a member of a very conservative religious group. Jacob does not adhere to all of the teachings of the group, but values the structure and discipline the group encourages. Jacob feels his success is due to the strict teachings of the group, even if Jacob “strays” from a few of those teachings. One item the group forbids that Jacob routinely takes part in is gambling. The group feels gambling is relying on luck and not God. There are many “traps” that go along with gambling, such as addiction, alcohol, and fornication. They feel it is testing God and not trusting God. Jacob goes to a casino on a weekly basis as a way to release some stress and have some fun. While he does have a drink or two, he never indulges and never spends more money than his set limit. One time at the casino, Jacob hits a jackpot worth over $500,000. Considering this a blessing from God, he wants to donate most of the money to the group. He is only keeping a portion of the money to pay for his only daughter’s college education. In this case, the Government team must uphold the statement: It is morally acceptable for the group to take the money.
