Hosting the Irish
Hosting the Irish – 2010
The Irish debaters will return in 2010. It is time to invite campuses to host them. All colleges with interest in debate are welcome to apply – NPDA, APDA, policy, public debate, etc. These three debaters are the Irish National Champions – and are witty, engaging and good!
Schools hosting the Irish must provide the following:
- Lodging for two/three nights, preferably in a motel/hotel
- A specific contact who promises to coordinate their stay
- An “event” (exhibition debate?) in which the Irish debaters are featured
- An “outing” (Disneyworld?) which allows the Irish to appreciate your locale
- And a fee of $400 to offset the costs of the Irish tour of America
Most likely, this will be the first visit to the U.S. for the Irish debaters so some emphasis will be placed on creating a “see America Tour” that allows them to appreciate the heritage, the history, the geography, the beaches and the amusement parks that define our country.
The following are the very tentative dates for the 2010 Irish American tour. Dates may be rearranged slightly to accommodate host preferences
- Arrive in Denver, from Dublin, Saturday, March 13
- Denver – Regis University (Saturday March 13-Tuesday March 16)
- Travel to Lubbock for NPDA, Wednesday, March 17
- Irish Debate at NPDA Friday, March 19
- Guests of NPDA in Lubbock: Wednesday, March 17 – Monday March 22
- Second stop (near Texas?): Arrive Tuesday, March 23 – Leave Thursday, March 25
- Third stop: Arrive Thursday, March 25 – leave Saturday, March 27
- Fourth stop: Arrive Sunday, March 28– leave Tuesday, March 30
- Fifth final stop, likely Miami: Arrive Wednesday, March 29, Leave Sunday, April 4

To apply to host the Irish, please contact Brent Northup, Irish Visit Coordinator (bnorthup@carroll.edu). Include the details of your proposal:
- name of the host who coordinates and provides transportation;
- exact place of lodging;
- description; date/time of an “event”;
- description and date of “outing”;
- and agreement to pay $400 to host the Irish.
There will be no deadline for applications, with proposals accepted until the tour is finalized. We plan to announce all hosts no later than, Feb. 1, however, so sooner is better.
